Basic Gun Defense
An armed attacker thinks they have all the power and control in the world.
REMEMBER: When you take the weapon away, the attacker is then fighting for his life.
4 Stages of Gun Defense
- Redirect
- Control
- Attack
- Disarm
These stages are separate in name but not necessarily in time. To be effective they must be done almost simultaneously.
Tips to help you survive an armed encounter
- You must use undetectable movements whenever possible
- React in the shortest possible line and time
- When the gun or knife is moved from the target area it must be done so in the shortest line possible
- If an attacker tells you to do something with your hands (put 'em up), that is the time to attack because they are already expecting movements from your hands
- Just because you have their gun DO NOT assume it is loaded or even works
- Most Importantly - If you have a chance to run - RUN
Techniques that will be covered today
- Disarm while drawing the weapon - this will apply to either a gun or knife
- Attack from the front - can be done from either a head, chest or stomach position; also from close range, intermediate and just past arms length.
